Rector's Easter Message 2008

From Andrew's Net, Easter 2008

Things never stay the same. In a profound sense, everything that happens is a 'one off'. As the ancient Greek thinker, Heraclitus, put it, 'You cannot step twice into the same river, for other waters are continually flowing on.' We can react to this defensively. Alternatively, we may welcome it with open arms. Most of us probably do a bit of both.

The Church is a symbol of stability. We do the same things each year. Soon we will relive Jesus' terrible death and resurrection. But, like the river always moving on, these stories seem the same, but they are not. For one thing, we have changed - another year of experience has flown under the bridge Consequently we have fresh things to discover in these stories.

Similarly St Andrew's cannot stand still. The Church has been there since 1125. But the St Andrew's family is always changing. New people are born and baptized. Some move away, and others move into Haughton. Some find faith in later life, others falter. Faithful people come to the end of their lives and go on to heaven. Our community goes on changing and so must we.

Logo: St.Andrews, Haughton le SkernOur new logo (right) captures something of this. But we do not simply want change for change's sake. Like a ship travelling onwards, the Church tries to follow Christ's call to Andrew, Follow me' She will hopefully always have a crew that is inspired by that challenge.

Our forward momentum depends on our capacity to raise three sails to catch the wind of the life given by the threefold God - Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Do join us throughout this Easter season as we seek once more to find that life in the stories about Jesus.
